Cherry Deer Sticks
Maraschino cherries flavor these cherry deer sticks, creating a unique tasting snack that's sure to become a favorite. Bits of the bright red fruit are laced throughout the sticks, providing visual appeal along with the great taste.
Maraschino cherries are made by soaking pitted cherries in a flavored syrup, and then dying them either red or green. The variety of sweet cherry, Royal Ann, is most commonly used. The red variety of Maraschino is usually flavored with almond, while the green is flavored with mint.
Maraschino Cherry Deer SticksIf you have a sweet tooth, you'll like the venison snack sticks that this recipe creates. And kids love 'em! Here's the recipe...
- 2 pounds ground venison
- 1 teaspoon Tender Quick® Curing Mix
- 1 small jar of red Maraschino Cherries
- 1/4 cup white sugar
- 1/4 cup cherry brandy or kirsch (or cranberry juice for the kids)
- 1/4 teaspoon white pepper
Add the Tender Quick® to the venison and mix well. Refrigerate overnight.
Drain the Maraschino cherry liquid into a blender. Remove the stems from the cherries and add them to the blender, along with the kirsch, sugar and pepper. Blend until the cherries are finely chopped.
Combine the blender ingredients with the ground venison, mixing thoroughly. Allow this mixture to rest for an hour or two, then form and dehydrate. To learn how snack sticks are formed and dried, visit Making Deer Snack Sticks.
